Drop in Fridays
at Natural Creativity

Flexible weekly community learning

Every Friday, we gather at the Natural Creativity Center in Germantown for a flexible, community-centered day of self-directed education. Families use this program to try out ALC culture, add an extra day of learning, or bring new friends into the community.

Drop-In Fridays are multi-age and welcoming. Kids dive into their own projects, games, and collaborations, while parents are invited to use the shared coworking space. The atmosphere is lively but relaxed — an open invitation to explore what self-directed learning feels like.

We believe learning happens best in community. Each Friday begins with a group check-in, where learners can share their plans or offer activities to others. The day unfolds with open play, creative projects, and group offerings that anyone can join. In the afternoon, we gather again to reflect, share stories from the day, and celebrate our discoveries.

For many families, Drop-In Fridays are a first step into self-directed education. They provide a low-commitment way to experience the freedom and responsibility of SDE, while connecting with a network of supportive families.

Our Day

Families arrive in the morning at the Natural Creativity Center, settling into the space however feels right — kids jump into games, explore materials, or make plans with friends, while parents are welcome to set up in the coworking area. Around 9:30, the group gathers for a community check-in. Learners share their intentions, propose activities, and decide what they’d like to explore together that day.

The rest of the morning flows with play, projects, and offerings. Some children work on ongoing creations, others join group activities, and many shift between games, art, and collaboration with peers. Parents can choose to observe, cowork, or join in.

After lunch and a midday check-in, the afternoon continues with open play, creative projects, and optional offerings from facilitators, students, or families. Around 2:30, the community regathers to tidy up and reflect on the day before heading out by 3.

What to Bring and Wear

Bring lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. Comfortable clothes for play, movement, or messy projects are recommended.
